ORCHESTRAL MUSIC24 Suona of Eastern Gansu
The "qupai" of Eastern Gansu suona has the function of a reduced score, and thus any instrumentalist can play knowing the title. This school has a repertory of 200 qupai. The Eastern Gansu suona family has longer conical tube body and a larger bowl than that of other parts of China. This school is today contributing to the large and coherent reeded wood-wind group producing the "shengguan" spectrum for the Chinese orchestra.Shang Fen-dou & Shen Sin-yan

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS & ACOUSTICS36 A New Look at the Ancient Round Lute: The Ruan
Instrument making in the 20th Century has been complicated by a lack of direction for the Chinese orchestra. This lack of direction was caused by a lopsided thinking of the existence of only one national orchestra type in China. A case in point is the misuse of the ancient round lute, the ruan. The author suggests a whole new perspective for looking at the role and the acoustical design of the ruan.Shen Sin-yan
