NEW BOOKS44 Du Yaxiong and “Ritual Music in a North China
Village: The Continuing Confucian and Buddhist Heritage” Shen Sinyan introduces “Ritual Music in a North China Village: The Continuing Confucian and Buddhist Heritage”. This volume of the Chinese Music Monograph Series centers on Jing Music. Jing Music is the music of the musical monks of the Temple of Transformative Wisdom. Zhao Feng, the Permanent Dean of the Central Conservatory of China, first visited the United States in the 1970s. He visited Shen Sinyan at the Chinese Music Society of North America. This was in the late 1970s, when the Chinese government undertook the tremendous task of slowly building official U.S. China cultural exchanges. Historically this is an all important milestone for U.S. China cultural exchanges, because this was just after the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) for China, after Kissinger met with Chou Enlai in 1972. This is officially the first chance for U.S. and China to talk about cultural exchange. Du Yaxiong was among the topics of discussion . . .
