All Associate Member of the Chinese Music Society of North America have access to the research resources of the Chinese Music Research Institute. The Chinese Music Society of North America was organized as the Chinese Musicians International Network in 1969, and grew to an international organization in 1976. Its Educational Services Division provides highest-quality, constantly updated information based on the research of the Society's Research Institute Research Teams. Membership today includes scholars and musicians from more than 165 countries. The Society contributes to a large number of cultural communities in the U.S., Canada, and internationally through their worldwide network of human resources, forums, workshops, and publications. The Chinese Music Society's public programs open doors to a wide range of opportunities for the young and adults in culture, instrumental and vocal music, theater and dance, composition, performance and theory. The Society sponsors the U.S. and European Concert Tour of the Chinese Classical Orchestra, the Silk & Bamboo Ensemble, and Concerts & Lectures for communities, museums and university campuses year-round.

The Society celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year. In the three decades, the CMSNA has grown to be the largest Chinese cultural arts organization in the U.S. Its Research, Performance, and Education programs are widely credited with "Making Chinese Music Totally Accessible". Its programming methodology used in designing the U.S. and European Concert Tour of the Silk & Bamboo Ensemble, the Chinese Classical Orchestra, and the Recital and Lecture Programs have been considered one of the most practical and effective nationally. The National Endowment for the Arts has named the Society center of excellence in music. The Silk & Bamboo Ensemble has been chosen to represent the United States in Fourth of July Concerts in Europe! Some of the major projects of the Chinese Music Research Institute and recent accomplishments include:

  1. The Harmony System Project - This is a major international project comparing and establishing the harmonic and musical preferences of different cultures using the principles of cultural acoustics.
  2. The Shang-Zhou Bronze Bell Project - This project identifies the musical preferences of the Chinese people in the Shang and the Zhou periods through the study of the harmonic tuning of period instruments. Our researchers further elucidate the relationship between musical preferences then and now, and throughout history.
  3. The Orchestra Project - This major project establishes the historical and cultural acoustical foundations of Chinese orchestral music. It is tied into practical composition and performance of all Chinese music. It is also the scientific reference point for comparing instrumental and ensemble music of the East and the West.
We are honored to be supported and associated with musicians and music lovers like you. Please help the Society spread its goal of Creating an Artistic Climate for the Advancement of Music as an Arts as well as a Means to further Human Understandings!
